Should you open or hold sealed Pokémon packs?

4 min read

Should you open a sealed Pokémon pack or keep it sealed? It's one of the oldest debates in the hobby, and the honest answer is that it depends on what you actually want out of it. Here are the trade-offs, without the hype.

The case for opening

  • The experience. Opening is the fun part — the reveal, the chase, the chance at a card you want for your collection.
  • Singles you choose. If there's a specific card you're after, opening packs is a lottery; buying the single is deterministic. Know which one you're doing.

The case for holding sealed

  • Condition stays pristine. Sealed product can't be damaged the way a loose card can.
  • Optionality. A sealed pack can always be opened later; an opened pack can never be resealed.

Where digital opening fits

Opening packs digitally is a way to get the reveal experience against the real pack odds without committing a physical pack to being opened. On RipVault you keep what you pull: vault it, ship the genuine physical card to your door, or sell it back for coins. If a card matters to your collection, you can bring it into the real world; if it doesn't, you haven't cracked a sealed pack to find that out.
